Wave outline above Isaiah 43:2 lettering
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black wave outline sits above the words Isaiah 43:2, written in a handwritten script. The linework is single-weight and unshaded, with the wave's curls drawn as continuous lines. The ink is black against warm skin, and the patterned fabric of a waistband fills the lower edge of the frame.

Sit yourselves down, and mind the fiddle case, Tom Penhallow, before you sit on it. The band can wait five minutes. This is about the Marian, the crabber out of Porthkerris, and the night the wind went round to the north-east and took her boat clean off the Scarrow.

Old Alf Trewin was at the wheel. He kept a verse on a card in his oilskin pocket, and he read it aloud in the dark like a man counting sheep. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee. He said it over and over while the sea came green over the bow and the engine coughed. Four men aboard, and not one of them a churchgoer, Alf included, though he'd never have admitted it in the Ship.
They came in on the flood at first light, all four of them, rowing the dinghy with their hands because the oars had gone. The card was pulp by then. Alf had the ink of it on his palm, the words run into the creases of his hand, and he would not wash it off for a week.
So when the chapel committee wanted a sign for the new hall, Alf sent them a single wave drawn in black pen, with the number of the verse written under it, and nothing more. Nobody asked him to explain. Now go on, Tom, strike up the reel, and somebody fetch me a pint of the dark stuff.
