Small black lettering reading Jeremiah 29:11 with a small cross beside it, tattooed on the inner wrist and forearm.

Jeremiah 29:11 and cross on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words Jeremiah above the numbers 29:11 in a typewriter-style serif font, with a small upright cross to the left. The linework is clean and solid, in black ink with no shading. The photograph is taken close up on the inner wrist, with the hand curling in from the top of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The typewriter has a sticking e, so forgive the gaps. I have been sat on the back deck of the Mercy Ann since six, watching the lock at Hythe fill and empty like a held breath, and I keep thinking about the card you sent from Leeds. You wrote the verse out in capitals and underlined the bit about the future twice, as if I might have missed it the first time round.

Dad would have hated that you chose Jeremiah. He said the prophets were all moaners with a grudge against the weather. But he kept that same verse pinned above the galley stove for eleven years, typed on the old Imperial, and when the boat took water at Thorne, the card was the only paper in the cabin that came out dry.

I have made a decision. Tomorrow I am going to Ferrybridge to find the man with the ink kit who sets up behind the chandler's. Don't tell Mum. I want the words done in that same typewriter face, a little uneven where the machine jumped, with the small upright cross beside them so nobody mistakes it for a shopping list. Dad's machine was never straight either.

Plans, love. I cannot tell which of us wrote them down first, but I know which one of us is still here to read them out to the lock keeper.
