Wave tattoo on the side of a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot showing a small black tattoo of three connected waves on the outer side, just below the ankle bone. The linework is thin and even, with the ink solid black and no shading. The skin is pale and softly lit, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame with plenty of skin around it.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the wet stone, for the tide does not care who is sitting on it. You want the tale of Maud Corrie, who kept the bell at Gullhaven before the sea took the bell and then the tower. Every night she rang it once for each boat out past the point. Her husband's boat was the last, and she rang it three times, though the bell had no clapper left by then and only made a sound like a cough.

Now, the men in the village said she was mad, and perhaps she was, for she took to standing on the wall where the north gate used to be and counting the waves coming in under the cliff. One, two, three. Then she'd wait. Her neighbour's boy swore to me she counted to a hundred once and never got past three, because the third wave always came in with the boat riding on its back. She would lift her hand, and the boat would tip over the crest and be gone again before she could say his name.
Here is the part you will not believe, and I do not ask you to. The morning they found her on the wall, her hand was still raised, and the sea below lay flat as slate. Three small waves curled in against the rocks, neat as stitching, and went out again. Nobody came home on them. But the gulls sat along the broken parapet all that day, facing the water, as though they were counting too.
Count with me now. One. Two. Three. There, that is the tide turning, and you may all go home.
