Infinity symbol on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single infinity symbol is drawn in thin black linework on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm. The lines are even and crisp, with a small curved mark sitting inside one of the loops. The ink is solid black against the skin, and the background is soft and out of focus.

Tilly Marsh had rung the tenor for eleven years before anyone let her touch the treble, and she still counted the changes under her breath the way other people hummed. On the last practice before the frame came down for repairs, the ringers stood in a loose circle of rope and sweat while Mr Okafor, who had taught her everything, tapped the chart with a blunt pencil and frowned at the ceiling as if the old oak might answer.

"Grandsire Triples is a path that never quite ends," he said. "Seven bells, every row different, and when the last one comes you find yourself back where you started, only lower down the tower and a little more tired." He drew a figure of eight on the back of a hymn sheet, then put a small tick inside one loop where the lines crossed. "That's where you breathe. Everybody needs somewhere to stop, even in a pattern that goes on forever."
They rang the peal that evening with the church door propped open and the village drifting in to listen. Tilly kept her eyes on the sally in front of her and let the rhythm carry her hands, up and down, round and back, through every bell's little dance. Near the end, when the rows began to repeat themselves, she felt the familiar lightness that came just before a mistake, and she held on through it until the last row closed.
Afterwards she sat on the bench with the chart on her knee and found the tick Mr Okafor had drawn. Beside it she made her own small mark, and then she coiled the rope and listened to the bells settle one by one, the sound coming back down to them a moment late, as if the tower needed a while to think about it.
