Single-line wave on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a single curling wave, drawn as one continuous thin black line with a rounded crest and a tapering tail. The skin is pale and the image is a close view of the inner wrist against a light background. The linework is clean and even, and the tattoo is entirely black ink with no shading or colour.

Dear Nell,

We pulled into Skegness on Tuesday with the big wheel in pieces on six lorries and the rain coming sideways off the Wash. Mr Abernethy has me on the fairground signs now, which means I spend my days on a plank above the dodgems with a pot of enamel and a brush I am not allowed to wash in the sea. He says the Waltzer needs a new board across the front, and he wants a wave on it, one stroke, no lifting, the way his father did it before the war.
I tried for two days. The first attempts had a join where I had lifted the brush to reload, and he tore them off the board with his thumbnail and said the sea does not stop to dip its brush. On the third morning the sun came out for ten minutes and I stood on the plank and let the line go out from the crest, curling over itself, then down and out to nothing, the tail thinning until the bristles had no more paint to give. It came off the brush as if it had been waiting.
Mr Abernethy looked at it for a long time, wiping his hands on his coat. Then he said it was a wave that had already broken and was going home, which is the sort of thing he says when he means it is good.
The board goes up at the Saturday opening. I will be on the gate counting tickets, so I will see the wave every time someone walks under it. Write back and tell me whether the sea at Morecambe still goes that flat grey colour, because I have been looking at this one all week and cannot tell any more.
Love, Tom
