We All Fall Down Sometimes lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a line of connected script lettering in a single dark ink, set on a slant and reading We All Fall Down Sometimes. Below the text sits a small outlined star made of rounded scalloped loops. The image is a straight-on close-up against a plain pale background, with the lettering filling most of the frame.

A lad came round the corner at a run, carrying a crate of eggs from the farm stall, and his trainers went out from under him on the wet stone. The eggs held. He sat there with the crate in his lap and the look of someone waiting to be told off. So I did what Ivy did when my knees were skinned at six. I sang him the bit of the old ring game we'd all been taught: ring a ring o' roses, then down we go, we all fall down, sometimes. He laughed, which was the point. He got up, and I handed him the cutter to hold while I counted his eggs.
When he gave it back, the rain had got into the dough I'd rolled that morning, and the star edges had gone soft. I pressed it again anyway, five points in a row, and lifted each one onto the tray. By noon the tin was full, the lid was back on, and the last biscuit had come out with every scallop sharp.
