The tattoo is a line of black script lettering that reads We All Fall Down Sometimes, running diagonally across the skin. Below the text is a small star outline built from scalloped loops. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the composition is a close, straight-on photograph against a pale skin tone and a plain background.

Dear Nell,

The kettle on the Mary Ellen has finally given up, so I am writing this at the little table by the porthole while the canal goes past at a walking pace. Dad would have called it a stubborn bit of water. Mum would have said it was just resting. You know I never believed either of them, and I still don't, but I have stopped arguing with the lock-keeper at Hawkesbury about it.

The star you gave me before I left is pinned above the stove now, that little scalloped one with the loops. I asked Mr Pryce at the boatyard what it was for and he said sailors used to have them stitched on their sleeves so the sea would know they were coming back. I told him I was not a sailor and he said nobody on the canals ever was, which I think was meant kindly.

I fell off the gangplank at Stoke on Tuesday, in front of three anglers and a dog. Nothing broke except my pride and the good mug. I sat on the towpath laughing until I was properly crying, and an old man with a flask asked if I wanted a sip. It was tea with rum in, very strong. I think he was the first person all month who didn't ask me how I was getting on.

So I am sending you the mug's last piece as a keepsake, which is daft, and the news that I am still here, which is not. Come up in June. There is room in the bow locker if you don't mind a few spiders.

With all my love, Pip
