Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A split image showing handwritten text reading We Are Wild? with a loose scribble beneath it on the left, and a small black script tattoo of the same words on the right. The tattoo is on an arm, with thin, even linework and no shading, and the skin shows a faint reddish mark nearby. The photo is taken at a casual angle, with tiled flooring and black shoes visible at the bottom of the frame.

The note was propped against the sugar bowl when Ailsa came down, weighted with a limpet shell so the draught from the back door wouldn't lift it. Her sister's writing sloped the way it always did when Isla was in a hurry, the letters pressed hard enough to dent the paper. We Are Wild? it said, and beneath the question mark Isla had dragged the pen in a loop, as though she had changed her mind halfway through the stroke.

Ailsa read it standing up, then again sitting down with the kettle going cold. The ferry left Oban at half eight on Thursdays, and the Tuesday before had been so rough that the boat hadn't come at all, so there had been no word from the mainland for a week. Isla was supposed to be in Glasgow by now, working nights at the hospital laundry and sending money home in envelopes that smelled of diesel. Nobody in that house had said wild to anybody since their father's boat was sold.

She took her sister's old jumper from the hook in the hall and walked out to the rocks where they used to dare each other across the gully. The tide was coming in under the black weed, slow and certain. The question mark, she decided, was the braver part. It didn't claim anything. It only asked whether the thing could still be true.

Back inside, she took the pen from the jar by the phone and wrote under the question mark, pressing hard enough to dent the paper: Come and find out. Then she folded the note in half, tucked it into the pocket of her coat, and went to find the car keys for the crossing.
