Calloway keeps the wood type in a drawer of forty-one compartments, and by the second week of snow you can find a capital N without looking. The press sits under the eaves of the Black Hawk Hotel, where the pass road bends down into the valley, and every handbill that leaves this town is set backwards, letter by letter, until the ink turns it the right way round on paper. He says the Dutch taught him that. He says it every morning, as though you had asked.

The orders come up the road with the mail. A woman who runs the faro tables at the far end of town wants her name in bold above her door, CASINO QUEEN, with club and diamond pieces locked into the C and the Q so the letters look freshly dealt. A drover wants a notice for a stray, and the ornaments are packed in a tin: curling vines, a pair of revolvers cut from a single block, a hand of cards. You ink the blocks on the slab and pull the sheets one at a time, counting, because a bad impression costs a morning and there is no second mail until the thaw.
The last job is the strangest. A man with a wet coat and no name asks for PANHEAD in the tallest type you have, and he pays in coins still warm from his hand. Calloway says nothing. You set the letters, and when you reach the second A you find a cracked serif and fill the gap with a sliver of brass. The proof comes off clean. He folds it into his coat and walks back up towards the pass, and the snow closes behind him like a page being turned.
