Deer skull with antlers and crossed rifles
Black and grey · Flash
A bold, solid black silhouette of a deer skull with wide, branching antlers at the top, centred over two rifles crossed diagonally behind it. The design uses flat black fills with small white cut-out details on the skull and antler edges, with no shading or greys. The composition is symmetrical and sits on a plain white background.

Dad had the two rifles down from the hooks before the frost had lifted off the yard, laying them on the kitchen table as if he were setting out cutlery for a visitor we did not want. "Eleven years she's been coming through the hedge gap," he said. "Eats the brassicas off the top field and leaves her calling card on the gate."

I was seventeen and had spent the autumn pretending I couldn't feel my hands in the cold. I picked up the lighter one, the one with the scratched walnut stock, and the oil smelled like the shed where Granddad kept his pipe. "You want me to come?" I asked.
We walked the hedge line at dawn with our breath hanging in front of us. The doe wasn't there. Instead, under the old ash, we found the skull Granddad had nailed above the barn door the year he died, the one Dad had been meaning to take down for a decade. Its antlers had split in the wet, and a robin was picking at something in the eye socket.
Dad stood a long time with the rifles over his shoulder. Then he said, "Your granddad always said a man who takes only what he needs should be able to look at what he's left." He turned for the house. "Fetch the spade from the back porch. We'll bury her proper, not leave the lot of it on the gate for the crows."
