Whale and paintbrush on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a whale with a paintbrush laid diagonally across its body, with the brush tip finished in red. The linework is fine and the whale is shaded in soft grey, with light detail on its body and tail. It sits on the upper chest against a neutral background and a grey knit top.

Up on the ninth floor of Gull Point, where the lift had been broken since March, a painter called Ada Quarles kept a tin of ochre and one brush with a red handle. Every evening she painted the car park below, and every evening the car park looked a little less grey to her.

The whale came in the November rain. Nobody saw it arrive. It was simply there in the puddles by the bins, dark as the concrete, with its great head turned up toward the balconies as if it were listening. The children tried to climb on its back. The man from the housing office said it was a council matter and wrote it on a form. Ada said nothing, but she took her brush and her tin down the stairs and sat on the wet step beside it for three days.
On the fourth morning the whale lifted its tail and swam off over the roofs, low and slow, until it was only a smudge above the gasworks. Ada climbed back to her flat, dipped the brush and painted the whale on the wall beside her window, with a line of ochre drawn across its body like a spear she had never needed. When she rinsed the brush, the last of the red ran into the sink and stayed there.
The housing office sent a letter about the wall. Ada kept it under the lid of the tin and wrote back that the whale was not hers to take down. Some evenings, when the light came slantwise through the glass, she swore the painted tail had moved a little closer to the window.
