Whale and peony on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A humpback whale with its tail fluke curls around a large peony bloom and a rounded swirl of petal-like forms. The shading is built from dense stippled dots, with fine black outlines defining the whale, flower and fluke. The design is in black and grey and fills the centre of the upper back against plain pale skin.

Your mother's tin is open on the bench. Inside are the cutters she used every Easter for fish-shaped bread, and one she never explained: a long curved blade with its tail split into two flukes. You press it into a slab of rye and score the grooves the way she did, feathering each line with the back of a knife until the crust looks scraped by water.
By five the peonies in the tub by the door have started to open. You pipe a rosette of cream onto the cake for the Harbour Club's anniversary, layering the petals so they seem to unfurl under the lamp. You set the whale loaf beside it on the rack, its tail curling round the cake as if it means to lift it off the board.
When the first van pulls up, the baker's boy asks what the whale is for. You tell him it's for whoever comes in before the sun does. The window greys, and you see the tail has come out perfect, the cream blossom sitting in its curve like something it has carried all night.
