Whale in a geometric shape on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A whale swims across the middle of a diamond-like shape with a notched piece at the top, and dense coral sits in the lower part of the shape. The whale and coral are built from stippled dots that create soft shading, while the outline and notch are solid black. The palette is entirely black and grey, and the design is centred on the outer forearm against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell cut the tape on the crate with the stiletto she kept for invoices, and the smell of damp cardboard came up to meet her, followed by the ordinary grit of a house that had been shut for a year. The puzzle lay in a flat box marked in pencil: Sound Lane, do not sell separately. Inside, the pieces were sorted into bags by someone patient: edges in one, coral in another, the grey dots of the sea in a third that had split at the seam.

She tipped the picture out onto the trestle table at the back of the shop. A humpback rose through a diamond of stippled water, its pale belly broken into a thousand small crosses, and beneath it a thicket of coral crowded the base. At the top, where the sea should have closed over, there was only a notch of bare board. Nine hundred and ninety-eight pieces. She counted twice out of habit, then once more out of spite.

The solicitor said the old man had been a harbour pilot who liked to finish things at the kitchen table before the tide turned. He had no idea where the last two pieces had gone, and neither did the neighbours. On Thursday, while she was lifting the cardboard insert to dust the box, Nell found them taped flat to the underside, a fin and a sliver of sky, held there with a strip of masking tape and a note in capitals: NOT YET.

She set the notch first, then the fin, pressing each one down with her thumb until the edges disappeared. At a quarter past five the window was still black, and the whale rose out of the table as if it had only been waiting for someone to notice the gap.
