A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road out of Tambo Flats ran straight as a ruler for forty miles, and Hal Mercer had driven it so often he could feel each cattle grid through the seat. A box of survey pegs rattled in the footwell beside a number scribbled on a scrap of paper he no longer trusted. The triangle painted on the milestone at the turn-off had faded to a grey ghost, and the man at the petrol station had told him to look for the place where the shadow stopped.

At ten past eleven the light began to thin. Hal pulled onto the verge beside a concrete marker, cut the engine, and stood in the heat watching the sun slide behind a disc of dark that had no business being so round. The air went cool and tinny. Dogs stopped barking somewhere back in the scrub. He held up a tin of smoked glass from the depot and saw the sun reduced to a bright crescent, the rest of it a hollow where light should have been.

He thought about his father, who had surveyed this country with a theodolite and a bad temper, and who once told him that every true line had a point where it stopped pretending. Hal drove a peg into the gravel at the foot of the marker and sighted along the edge of the shadow. The dark kept moving. When the rim lit again it came back on one side first, a thin white bead along the curve, and he understood that the thing had been a split all along: half given to the sky, half kept for the road.

He drove home with the window down, humming nothing, and did not write the number down. Some things a man only needs to find once.
