Black shark tattoo on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A bold silhouette of a shark swimming across the forearm, with its mouth open to show a row of teeth, a dorsal fin and a tail fin. The design is filled with solid black ink and has no shading or grey tones, so the outline reads cleanly against the skin. The photo is taken close up, with a shiny metallic surface behind the arm and a small part of another tattoo visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shark that took the ferryman's boots was no monster, my grandmother always said, only a hungry fool with a bad temper and too much sea in him. Ask the fishermen of Pellow Quay and they'll tell you it was the boots that made him angry. Old Tobias Renn had worn them to bail the Marigold every morning for forty years, and when he finally stepped out of them on the slipway to wave at his wife, the thing came up through the green water like a ship's prow and took them clean off his feet.

Nobody saw the shark that day except the boy who sold bait from the tin hut. He swore the animal's jaw hung open wider than the hut door, every tooth as white as a gull's belly, and that the dorsal fin cut the harbour in two like a blade through butter. He also swore it turned its one black eye on him and winked. The boy was known for embroidery, so nobody believed a word, but the boots were gone and Tobias went home barefoot across the cobbles.

The next spring the Marigold went out with a new crew and a rope that had never been used. At the mouth of the bay the water went still and dark, and a tail as wide as a sail slid past the hull and rose, slow and deliberate, like a man putting a hat back on. Tied to the shark's dorsal fin, bobbing like a tiny flag, was a pair of brown leather boots with the laces still knotted. Tobias stood up in the stern, looked at them for a long time, and then, for the first time in forty years, laughed out loud.
