Whale tail above waves in dotwork
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A whale tail rises from a band of stylised waves, with the flukes angled up and slightly apart. The outline is a firm, bold black line, while the body of the tail is filled with fine stippled dots that build shading across the flukes and stalk. The design sits centred on a smooth patch of skin against a pale, softly lit background.

Now sit close, because the lift is broken again and I am too old to take the stairs twice. You lot think the sea stops at the bottom of the car park. It doesn't. It comes up the estuary every full moon and fills the old dock, and that's where the whale lived, the one with a tail as wide as a bus shelter.

Eddie Marsh was nine the summer the dock silted over. He'd climb the stairwell of Gull Court with a bag of chips and sit on the top step, the window crusted with salt, watching for the tail. Nobody believed him. His mum worked nights at the fish plant and his dad had gone off to the rigs and never come back for a birthday. So Eddie talked to the whale instead, every evening, through the cracked pane.
One night the tide climbed so high it lapped the bottom step. Eddie heard a slap like a door closing on the water, and there it was, the flukes lifting out of the black sea, pricked all over with small shadows like rain on a windscreen. They hung there a long while. Then the whale dipped them low and rose again, and the waves went round in rings the colour of old pewter.
His mum found him asleep on the step at dawn. The dock was just a dock again, mud and gulls. But on the sill lay a single grey scale, or maybe a flake of paint, and I've kept it in my handbag ever since. If you ask me nicely, I'll show you. Now the lift is working. Off you go before it changes its mind.
