"When You Wish Upon a Star" script on chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper chest and shoulders of a person wearing a black strapless top, with the head cropped out of frame. The tattoo is a flowing script phrase in black ink, with thin decorative swirls extending beneath the lettering and a small star-like motif near the centre. The ink is dark and crisp against pale skin, and the framing centres the design across the collarbones.

The W was the hard letter, and Ada Pryce had the enamel loaded and her finest sable ready before Dennis Vane came up behind her smelling of paraffin. He said the customers wouldn't read a word of it unless it swooped. She told him a sign was only a promise shouted across a field, and promises needed room to breathe.

She drew the phrase first in pencil on the hardboard. When You Wish ran long across the top in a joined hand, the loops of the Y dropping like a fishing line, and Upon a Star bent upwards where the letters crowded. Beneath it she laid the swirls, thin as cat whiskers, two curling tendrils that met under the middle word and held a small five-pointed star between them. It was the only ornament she allowed herself.
Peg Vane, Dennis's nine-year-old with a cardboard tiara, sat on the tailboard swinging her heels and asked whether the star was for wishing on. Ada said stars were no use for wishing, being far too busy burning. Peg said that was rude. Ada laughed and agreed, then told her the swirls were there to catch whatever got wished, so it wouldn't blow off over the marsh.
At dusk they hung the board above the coconut shy. Dennis lit the lamps one by one, and when the bulb over the W flickered on, the black enamel went glossy and the little star seemed to lean out over the stalls. Peg ran to the rail and shouted her wish across the field. Ada, wiping her brush on a rag, found she had nothing to add.
