Whisk tattoo on the forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small whisk is drawn in a single thin black outline on the inner forearm, with a straight handle leading to a teardrop-shaped wire head. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on a plain skin area against a light, striped background. A hand curls in the lower part of the frame, and the photo is in black and white.

Dear Tom,

The frost came in before I'd finished the Christmas orders, so the bakehouse windows have run with water all week and I've had to wipe the proving baskets dry twice a morning. Mr Ashby's mixer gave up on Tuesday with a noise like a kettle full of gravel, and since then it's been me and the old balloon whisk, the one with the bent wire you hid in the drawer under the scales the summer you were sixteen and swore you'd never bake again.

I didn't think I'd be glad of it, but I've whipped eleven dozen egg whites for the Sowerby wedding with that thing. Your wrist was always the right one for it. Mine goes sore by noon, but the peaks come up stiff and glossy when you keep the bowl cold and the wire moving in long, tight loops, the way you showed me with a jug of cream and a face like a thundercloud.

Mother asked after you at chapel. I told her you were well and busy, which is what she likes to hear. I did not tell her that I still hang the whisk on the nail by the oven each night, the one nearest the door, so it's the first thing the street lamp catches when I come in before dawn.

There's a card in the tin with the mince pie recipe. I've underlined the bit about the brandy. Come home for the snow if it comes. The bowl's still waiting for you.

Love, Nell
