White henna-style lace design on a hand

Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a hand decorated with white henna-style body art, including lace-like borders, a floral motif on the back of the hand, and small stars, crescent moons and chevrons on the fingers. The linework is fine and detailed, and the white ink stands out against the tan skin and a soft cream textured background. The hand is angled diagonally, with the design running from the wrist up to the fingertips.

The oven timer had been ticking for ten minutes before Sunita noticed it, because her hands were busy with the piping bag. Royal icing, thinned until it ran like cream from a spoon, was going round the base of a three-tier cake that had to be in a marquee in Harrogate by eight. Outside the shop window the street was still black, the lamp above the bin store the only light for a hundred yards.

Her mother had taught her lace work on the back of a baking tray, with a cocktail stick for a stylus, long before she was allowed near anything that would be eaten. "Don't think about the whole thing," Ma had said. "Think about the next dot." So Sunita worked dot by dot, a star here, a crescent there where the moon sat over the top tier like a paring of fingernail. The chevrons she saved for the side panels, three strokes that pointed the eye upward, which was the trick Ma swore by for nervous brides.

By five the bakery smelled of browned butter and the first loaves coming out. Tomas came through from the back with the proving baskets, saw the cake, and said nothing, which from Tomas was praise. She set the bag down and flexed her fingers. The icing had dried fine and white along her knuckles, a little lace of its own that she would scrub off later with a dish brush.

The van arrived at half six. The driver lifted the box as if it held sleeping birds, and Sunita watched the taillights go pink and then grey at the corner of the high street. Only then did she notice that the sky had changed, the bricks opposite gone the colour of weak tea, and the thin white crescent she had piped was still there in her head, lopsided and real, hanging over the rooftops where the real moon was fading.
