White ink dreamcatcher on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A white ink dreamcatcher sits on the outer upper arm, with a circular mandala ring at the top and five feathers hanging below it. The linework is fine and detailed, with dotted and patterned fills in the feathers and rings. The ink is white on darker skin, and the photograph is taken from a side angle against an indoor background.

The hoop had split at the join, so Nell bound it with fishing line and a dab of superglue, and by the time the glue went tacky the kitchen smelled like a hardware shop. Her son Tomas sat on the worktop swinging his heels, watching her tie the knots. 'Will it catch them?' he asked. 'Catch what?' 'The bad dreams. The ones that come in through the window when the wind's from the sea.'

She didn't answer straight away. She had gull feathers from the pier, grey and ordinary, and she wouldn't let him touch them. Instead she painted each one with white gouache and dotted a pattern along the quills using the blunt end of a darning needle, one dot at a time, which took longer than sense allowed. Her mother had done the same with Nell's school blazer buttons, and nobody had ever told her why. The mandala ring she drew with a pair of compasses, the point slipping twice on the cheap card until she gave up and used a saucer.
That night she hung it above the bed and sat in the armchair with the lamp off, listening to the boiler tick. The feathers moved in a draught from the gap under the door, and the white ink caught the streetlight in a way that made them look wet. Somewhere past midnight she must have dozed, because when she opened her eyes the room was grey and Tomas was standing beside her, holding his cup of milk with both hands.
'I dreamed a man was up a ladder,' he said, 'fixing the middle of the star so it didn't wobble.' He pointed up at the web, where the white centre had come loose and then, somehow, sat straight again. Nell looked at it for a long time and didn't say anything, because the dots had caught the first light from the window and the whole ring was burning quietly, like something that had been left on for them.
