White ink floral design on the top of a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a large floral design across the top of a foot, with toes visible at the right edge. The design is drawn in pale white ink with fine outlines, scrolling leaves and lattice-patterned petals. The white ink stands out softly against the skin tone on a dark background.

Mrs Ansell had the pattern pinned to the board before the kettle boiled, a sheet of brown paper gone soft at the folds. She tapped the rose in the corner with a bone pin. 'Rose first, always,' she said. 'The leaves can wait for nobody.' Ivy Pascoe, sixteen and three weeks into her apprenticeship, bent over the bobbins and counted pairs under her breath while the workroom window filled with grey light off the slate roofs of Wyvern Lane.

The lattice was the hard part. Every mesh had to close at the same tension, or the whole flower sagged like a wet sail. Ivy learned to feel the thread through her fingertips, the way the cotton went slack when she breathed wrong. By March she could work a scroll without looking. Mrs Ansell still unpicked half of what she did and said nothing, and that was how Ivy knew she was improving.
In May a parcel came from London with an old pattern book, and folded between two plates was a second sheet in a hand that was not Mrs Ansell's. It was the same flower, the same leaves curling off the stem like someone reaching for a cup, but in the margin were names Ivy didn't know and a date from 1921. 'My sister's,' Mrs Ansell said, and took the sheet, and laid it face down under the cloth.
That evening Ivy stayed late and finished the scroll the way the sister must have, leaving one loop open at the end, a small gap where the thread could come through. When she held the board up to the lamp the flower looked lifted off the paper and set down in the wrong light, pale and patient, waiting for someone to fill it in.
