White ink mandala tattoo with swirling ornamental linework across the shoulder and upper arm, photographed from behind.

White ink mandala on shoulder

Geometric · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large ornamental design of radial mandala motifs, paisley-like scrolls and swirling linework covers the shoulder and upper arm. The fine lines are rendered in white ink, so the pattern shows as a raised, pale tracery against the skin rather than as dark ink. The composition flows from a central circular medallion down and around the arm, with the back of the head and a bare shoulder visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the press is cold again this morning, and Mr Hallam has given me the medallion job, which I did not expect. You will laugh, because you always tease me about my hands. He wants a ring of rosettes at the centre of a calf cover, then scrolls running off it like spilled milk, all of it blind-tooled. No gold, no colour. Just the brass tool heated on the stove and pressed into the hide until the leather agrees to remember it.

The first three attempts I ruined. Too hot and the grain went shiny like a wet pebble; too cool and the lines came up soft as bread. Hallam stood behind me with his pipe unlit and said nothing, which is worse than shouting. On the fourth I counted under my breath, lifted the tool clean, and the paisley curl came away pale and standing proud of the skin. When I ran my thumb along it I could feel the whole swirl like a river on a map.

The book belongs to a Mrs Garrow in Leith, who sent a pressed fern with the order and wrote that her husband always traced the medallion with one finger while he read. Hallam says we will never see her face, only the parcel going up the hill in brown paper. I have decided to leave one petal of the centre rosette a fraction crooked, the way a hand would make it, though I have told nobody why.

Come home at Easter and I will show you the spine. In the afternoon, when the light comes in low across the bench, you can read the whole medallion without any ink at all, just the shadows the iron left behind. Your loving sister, Ada.
