Floral vine design across back of hand

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand shows a dark floral design running from the wrist across the back of the hand and down the middle finger, with a central flower, curling vines and dotted scrollwork. Small clear gems are set into some of the motifs, and the design appears to be henna-style body art rather than a tattoo. The lines are dark brown to black on warm skin, with a sparkly black fabric behind the hand providing strong contrast.

Dear Ammi,

The bride's mother wanted the vine to run all the way down to the middle finger, so I started at the wrist with the small dotted scrolls, the ones you taught me when I was nine and too impatient to sit still. Mix the cone fresh, let it rest, never rush the paste. The central flower took me longest, five petals opening out from a single dot, and every petal has to be a little uneven or it looks printed.

Then the gems. Mrs Haddad had brought a little tin of clear stones from the market in Bradford, and she pressed each one into the wet paste with tweezers while her daughter laughed at her for fussing. Two on the flower, one on each curl up the finger. They catch the lamplight in a way I did not expect. In the back room the whole thing looked like frost forming on a dark window.

The cloth beneath was black with silver flecks, the one from the shop, and against it the brown lines sank almost into the dark. I had to step back twice to check the vine still read as a vine. Nobody else in the room noticed. The mother did. She lifted the work toward the window and said nothing for a long while, which is the highest praise I have ever been given.

I am sending you a photograph on my phone, though you will say the screen flatters it. Tell Dadi the henna is good. Tell him I will be home on Sunday, and I will bring the tin.
