White ink outline tattoo of a sugar skull with heart-shaped eyes and nose on the ankle, in a fine line style.

White ink sugar skull on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small sugar skull is outlined in white ink on pale skin. The skull has heart-shaped eyes and nose, a row of teeth, and a flower-like pattern across the top of the head. The thin, even linework and close framing show the design clearly against the skin, with a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every November the bakers in Harrow Vale made skulls for the dead, and every year the Corrigan girl was given the outlining because her hand did not shake. Mrs Pell at the bakehouse said so. Nell Corrigan was twelve that autumn and had learned to pipe a heart onto a brow in one breath, the sugar stiff as chalk, the eye sockets left hollow for the candles that would go in them on the night.

The skull that mattered that year belonged to nobody in the village. It was for a man who had walked out of the valley in March with a tin trunk and no forwarding address, and whose wife had set a place for him anyway at the long table. Nell asked what he liked. Mrs Pell said he liked flowers on his head, like a lady's hat, and hearts, because he had always been a fool for love. So Nell cut the lines fine, a crown of petals scratched across the top of the skull, three hearts, one for each eye and one for the nose.

On the third night the wife came to the bakehouse and watched her work. She said nothing for an hour. When the outline was finished, Nell brushed white icing along each stroke, and the wife laughed, a short sound, and said the man had never once in his life stayed inside a line. Then she carried the skull to the sill for the morning, pale against the dark glass, and walked home without her coat.

Nobody saw him come back. By dawn the skull had gone from the sill, and in the frost where it had stood someone had left a single heart, no bigger than a thumb, pointing down the road out of the valley.
