Small shell tattoo on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small scallop shell is drawn in a thin black outline on the side of the ankle, with a few radiating lines inside the fan-shaped body. The linework is simple and unshaded, and the tattoo is very small against the pale skin. The photograph is taken close up at an angle, with the foot resting on a wooden surface and a white wall behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You reach the castle an hour before the rain, when the goats have gone quiet on the hill and the only sound is wind working through the window holes. The keep has lost its roof and half its north wall, but the gatehouse still stands, and someone has cut a scallop into the keystone. The ribs are shallow and worn almost smooth, and beneath them a column of small marks runs down the jamb like tally strokes.

Teresa, who has walked this road more times than she will admit, runs a thumb along the marks and says they are not tallies but directions. Every rib of a shell starts at the hinge and fans outward to the edge, she tells you, so a pilgrim who learns the lines can always find the place where the road divided. "Stone remembers what people forget," she says. You think she means it kindly, though she is already walking on toward the village with her poles clicking against the stones.

You stay behind with the keystone and the last of the light. There is a loose block in the sill below the carving, and behind it a hollow the size of a palm. You take the scallop you picked up on the beach that morning, the one you had meant to keep, and turn it so its ribs run the same way as the carving. It fits, almost. Pressing it in, you feel the cold of the stone seep into your fingers as the first drops begin to tick on the arch above you.

By the time you reach the village the rain has washed the path clean, but you find you can trace the way back without looking, one line at a time, from the hinge outward.
