A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The oven door bangs and you catch the tray before the loaves slump. Beyond the glass the sky over Hallam Street is still the colour of cold dishwater, but four stars hang above the chimney pots and have not yet given up. Your grandmother called them the bakers' lamps, lit by whoever rose first so nobody else could sleep past the milk float.

Tobias from the corner shop comes in with his flour barrow and asks why the shutters are still down. You tell him the sourdough wants another hour. He doesn't believe you, but he sets the kettle going anyway and leaves a paper bag of cinnamon on the counter, which is as close to thanks as he gets before seven.

Before the light comes you dust the marble with rice flour and draw the tree with the side of your thumb, the way she taught you: a trunk like a dropped pen line, branches that fork and curl, roots spread flat as the fingers of a hand. Four stars above the crown, two low at the sides. The flour holds the shape for about a minute. You have never once let it stay until the bread comes out, because the day always brushes it away with a tray or a sleeve.

This morning the boy from the flats is at the window early, nose almost to the glass, watching the lamps go out one by one as the sun lifts over the rooftops. You lift the last loaf onto the rack. The tree is gone from the counter, but on the misted pane his finger has drawn it again, and you leave it there for the milk float to see.
