White ink tree with crown and stars
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised tree with branching limbs rises from the bottom of the frame, with a crown shape at its top and small star shapes scattered around it. The design is rendered in raised or pale white ink with fine, even linework and no shading, and it shows clearly against the skin. The plain background and close framing keep the focus on the design.

The cook aboard the Heron had no name worth writing in the log, so the crew called him Salt, and he never argued. Every night of the long crossing he sat by the galley stove scraping the last of the flour from the sacks, and every night he made the same bread, round and pale, with a cross cut in its crust. The men ate it without thinking, the way you breathe.

One February the stores ran low and the captain demanded a feast regardless. Salt took a lamp down to the hold and found nothing but damp sacks and a rat's nest. He sat on a barrel and wept into his hands, and when he lifted his head there was a tree growing out of the boards beside him, white as frost on the rigging. Its branches were thin and bent like reeds, and above them sat a small crown, with seven stars scattered around it like sparks that had forgotten to fall. It was no tree a man could cut for firewood. It was only a shape that someone had drawn and never finished colouring.
He went back to the galley and baked with what he had, which was salt, water and the cook's last handful of meal. The bread came out pale as the tree. The crew ate until the pans were bare, and not one of them grew thin that winter. When the Heron made port in spring, the mate found a white bough pressed flat between the pages of the log, and beside it, in Salt's cramped hand, the words: Bread for Thursday, same as always.
