White Rabbit with pocket watch on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows an anthropomorphic white rabbit standing upright in a blue waistcoat and coat, holding a gold pocket watch on a chain. The fur is rendered with soft grey and white shading, with a pink-red eye and pale pink inner ears adding detail. The rabbit is centred on a bare thigh, with a patterned pair of shorts visible at the top of the frame.

Sit down by the cistern, the lot of you, and mind the wires. The old grandmothers told this one, and I'm the last who still has it right, so hush. There was a rabbit who lived under the rusted hills of Sundry Reach, where the sky stayed the colour of wet slate. He wore a blue coat cut from a dead sailor's greatcoat and a waistcoat with more pockets than sense, and he carried a gold watch on a chain that ticked when the world was loud and went quiet when it wasn't.

Every morning he lifted the watch, tutted at it, and said, "Late," to nobody in particular, to the gulls, to the cracked pylons leaning in the mist. "Late for what, though?" asked the girl who swept the mess hall, because she was nine and wanted the story to hurry. The rabbit never answered her. He only snapped the lid open and stared at the face, which had no hands at all, just a tiny painted door.

One winter the cisterns froze and the children of Sundry Reach began to fade at the edges, the way old photographs do. The rabbit buttoned his coat to the throat and walked the long road to the dead orchard, pink eyes streaming in the wind. He knocked on the painted door, which turned out to be the rusted hatch of the reservoir, and it creaked open onto a whole town of rabbits underground, every one of them late, every one of them carrying water up the stairs.

That's the trick of being late, my loves. Somebody has to keep walking when the clocks have stopped. Now, who's for the broth?
