White snowflake designs on open palms
Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo
Two open hands are shown palm up, decorated with white snowflake motifs of varying size, some with fine radiating linework and others as simple dotted shapes. Icicle-like drips in white run along the base of the palms and wrists, and small white marks sit on the fingers. The background is softly blurred autumn leaves, and the cream lace cuffs and pale dress keep the white designs visually prominent.

Every autumn the leaves came down on the car park behind Harrow Point, and every autumn old Mrs Adeyemi in flat 41 said the frost would come looking for its debt. Nobody on the eleventh floor believed her until the lift broke in October and a woman climbed the stairs with her palms held out in front of her, as if carrying water.

She knocked on the door of 38 with her hands still open. Her name was Marisol, she said, and she had been the winter that lived under the bins of the estate for as long as anyone could remember. The boy who answered, Dev, was nine and not frightened. He asked what she wanted. She said she wanted nothing but a warm place to stand until the first real cold came, and that she would pay in patterns.
She drew the frost onto the windows that night, fern shapes and six-pointed stars, and by morning the whole block sparkled while the leaves lay brown and stuck to the tarmac. Icicles hung from the balconies in rows like teeth. Mrs Adeyemi came out in her slippers, looked up at the eleventh floor and said nothing at all.
When the paying was done, Marisol left a single flake on the lift button where Dev would find it. It was not a flake at all but a small cold coin. He kept it in a biscuit tin until spring, when it had melted to a thumb of water, and he understood the debt had been settled in full.
