Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person seen from behind, seated in a chair, with a light top pulled up to expose the upper back. The tattoo is black script lettering reading Why Serious? with the word So below and a small caret mark between them. The ink is a single dark tone on a plain background of a bright tiled room, with the lettering placed centrally on the back.

Dear Mags, you will not believe what has happened to the regatta bills. The proof came back from the stone on Tuesday with the headline set as Why Serious? and then, tucked beneath it, a little caret where the word So ought to go. Somebody had marked the insertion in the margin, nobody will own up to it, and the lad at the press set the word exactly where the mark sat and never looked up again.

Mr Pryce held the sheet to the window for a full minute, then laughed so hard he had to sit down on the paper guillotine. He said the caret was the only honest thing in the building. Every proofreader's mark, he told me, is a small confession that the thing as written is not yet right, and most of us spend our lives hiding ours under a clean sheet of paper.

So we ran the bills as they stood. Four hundred went up along the pier, and by Saturday half of Margate was asking the fishmonger why he was so serious about the price of plaice. The Council sent a man round with a ladder and a face like vinegar, and he stood reading the poster for so long that the gulls started to circle him. He went back to the office without tearing a single one down.

I have kept the proof in my handbag. Some mornings I take it out and look at that little caret, pointing down at nothing in particular, and I think it is the most sensible thing anyone has written all year. Write soon and tell me whether your Harold has been asking you anything serious lately.
