Wild Spirit lettering with a feather
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn design showing the words WILD SPIRIT in uneven, sketchy capitals, with a long feather drawn beneath them. The feather is rendered with fine, feathered pencil-like strokes and soft shading along its edges, while the lettering uses bold, rough black lines. The plain white background and centred composition make the design easy to read.

Dear Ada,

The jackdaw finally came down the chimney on Tuesday, and Mam had the whole kitchen open to the sky before she would let me near it. It flapped about the flagstones knocking over the kettle and the good cups, and in the end it was Dad who caught it in his cap. He stood in the yard holding it like a hot loaf while it glared at us both, then he tipped his hand and it went up over the orchard as if it had never been in a fix at all.
It left one feather behind, caught in the soot by the grate. I have pinned it above the dresser with a bit of tape, though Mam says its dust will get in the bread. It is long and grey-black, and the ends have gone soft and frayed as if someone brushed them the wrong way. I keep thinking it looks like it was pulled out in a hurry.
Mr Pryce from the chapel asked after you on Sunday. I told him you were in London learning to be a proper typist, and he said that was a fine thing for a girl with a wild streak. I did not tell him you had written WILD SPIRIT on the back of your last postcard in capitals so large they ran off the edge. He would have thought it was about me, and I let him.
Come home at Easter if the trains are running. Bring your good scissors, and we will cut the hedge back together and see who the wild one really is. Love, Nell.
