Wildflower bouquet on an arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A slender bouquet of wildflowers rises from a gathered base of thin stems, with open blooms, closed buds and small sprigs of leaves. The linework is delicate and even, using single fine black lines with no shading. The photograph is black and white and shows the design centred on smooth skin against a plain background.

In the kingdom of Harrow Vale the old king had grown tired of gold. He sent word through every village that whoever brought him a bouquet of truly wild flowers would have a purse of silver and a seat at his table.

Tamsin, who kept the goats above the ford, had no silver to lose. She went out at first light with a small knife and a length of grey string. She cut the stems low where they were thin and crooked: a poppy with its head still closed, a daisy the goats had nearly eaten, a spray of yarrow with its feathered leaves, and a few blue spikes from the verge by the mill wall. She gathered them in one hand, tied the stems together, and let the flowers rise above the knot like a fountain.

At the palace the courtiers laughed at the bundle. The steward wanted it thrown on the midden. But the king took it from him and turned it slowly in the light, then asked where each flower grew. Tamsin told him: the ditch, the hedge, the field gate, the wall by the mill. He was quiet for a long while. Then he said he had spent thirty years sending for things that could not be found, and had forgotten what was already growing outside his own door.

He gave her the silver and ordered the bouquet set in a jug on the windowsill of the great hall, where it stayed until the stems went brown. Tamsin walked home over the ford with an empty purse and a light head. Nobody gave her a seat at the table, but every spring the verges along the road to Harrow were left uncut, and the goatherds said the king had made it a law.
