Infinity symbol lettering designs

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A set of hand-drawn infinity symbol designs on white paper, each with handwritten words such as love, faith, peace, hope, infinity, young and live the life you love, plus a small heart outline. The linework is thin and even, drawn in black ink with a black fineliner pen lying across the top of the sheet. The sheet is arranged in loose rows with the designs spaced apart, and the paper has a warm pinkish tint.

You have been drawing the same loop since the lock at Hatton closed behind you. Pen in your fist, sketchbook propped against the stove rail of the narrowboat Marigold, rain coming sideways off the cut. Every line runs out and comes back on itself, which is the only trick you have ever trusted. Your sister says the canal goes nowhere but round, and you tell her that is the point.

Dennis, who has steered Marigold for thirty years, leans in the doorway with his tea and reads the words over your shoulder. Love. Faith. Hope. Peace. He taps the page where you wrote young and says that is a lie, nobody on a boat stays young past the second winter. You do not argue. You fill the bottom row with a loop and the words live the life you love, then tear the sheet out and pin it above the gas ring.

In April the pen runs dry. You find the black fineliner rolling under the bench, and you spend an evening trying to make the loop tighter, the ink finer, so one stroke can hold a whole sentence. Dennis watches the nib scratch the paper and says nothing until the kettle boils. Then he says the canal has been a figure of eight all along, two locks meeting at the middle, and you can take whichever side you like.

You write you and me inside the left-hand loop, small enough to fit between the crossing and the edge. The next morning you cast off before the mist lifts, and the water folds under the hull and back again, and you keep the sheet folded inside your coat, the ink still soft enough to smudge.
