Black and grey wing tattoo across the ribs and a mandala design on the forearm of a woman in a black bikini standing in the sea.

Wing and mandala tattoos on a woman in a bikini

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a black bikini stands in shallow sea water, photographed from the chest down with her face cropped out of frame. A black and grey wing tattoo with shaded feathers sits across her torso, and a dark ornamental mandala design covers her forearm and wrist. A vertical line of small script runs down the side of her hip, and the photo is lit warmly with sunlight on the water.

You learn the lamp by its sulk before its turn. The brass clockwork in the Wreckers' Point tower gives a little cough every ninety seconds, and on the night the gale came round from the west you were the only one awake to hear the gap in it. Old Hollis had gone down to the cottage with his chest, and the relief boat would not come until the sea let go of the harbour wall.

Up in the lantern room the lens threw its rings across the ceiling, a mandala of prisms you had polished every morning for eleven years without once looking at it properly. Tonight you did. Each ring turned like a small sun on its own axis. You wound the weights by hand, counting the turns under your breath, and when the beam swept out over the black water it caught a gull, wings spread flat against the wind, hanging above the rocks as if someone had pinned it there.

It stayed in the light all night. At dawn it folded and dropped onto the gallery rail, shook out one grey feather, and left it on the cold iron for you. You kept the feather in the logbook between the tide tables, and every time the lamp coughed after that, you pressed the feather flat and waited for the beam to come round again.
