Wing tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single wing is tattooed on the side of a woman's ankle, with feather lines drawn in dark grey and softer grey shading. The wing angles up from the anklebone towards the shin, and the background is a plain grey floor. Her foot is in a beige suede court shoe with gold stud detailing.

Dear Ruth,

You'll want the full account of Saturday, so here it is, though I've been told I write like a ledger. The registry office in Hebden Bridge had its doors propped open for the heat, and a pigeon kept walking in and out under the chairs as if it had been booked too. Your Daniel went white when the vows started, and I thought, well, that's the nerves, love, not the cold feet.

Then the feather came down. It was grey, long as my hand, and it turned over twice before it landed on the register table, right by Lorna's pen. Nobody moved. The registrar, Mr Adeyemi, who has married half the valley and never once blinked, just said, "Well, that's a sign," and everybody laughed, and Lorna laughed loudest, which I think was the first honest thing she'd done all day.

I kept the feather. I know you'll say I'm being soft. It's in my purse now, between the bus pass and the chapel raffle ticket, and I took it out on the bus home to look at its edge, where the barbs run in neat little combs like the ones Dad used on the sheep. Lorna asked me to post it to her in a card when they get back from Whitby. I told her I'd wrap it in tissue and keep it safe until then.

Love, Aunt Carol
