Trail of small paw prints on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A trail of five small paw print tattoos runs up the side of a bare ankle, curving from the heel towards the shin. The prints are solid black with clean outlines, and a soft grey shadow sits beneath the trail. The skin is lit evenly against a pale wooden floor, with black peep-toe heels in the foreground.

The frost had kept the prints sharp all the way from the stile to the beech wood, and Marjorie Penhallow had told you not to follow them past the water meadow. You went anyway, boots soaking through at the ditch, the lantern swinging from the crook of your arm and the dog's old lead coiled in your coat pocket like a question you had not yet asked.

Five prints, then a gap where the trail doubled back under the hawthorn, then five more. Something had been walking in a loop, a patient loop, the way old Tom's collie used to circle the sheep pens before lying down. You crouched by the third print and pressed your thumb beside it. The mud was still cold, but the edges had softened, and a single bramble leaf had settled into the heel of the fourth, as if the animal had paused to decide something.

Beyond the hawthorn the wood opened onto the old charcoal burners' clearing, where the ground dipped and a grey mist lay low like spilt milk. The trail ran straight to the lip of the dip and stopped. No drag marks, no blood, just the last print pressed deep with its toes spread, as if whatever made it had stepped off into nothing and had not minded.

You stood there a long while with the lantern hissing. Then you turned back, the lead knocking against your hip with every step, and when you reached the stile the lamp in Marjorie's window was still lit. You did not tell her about the clearing. You told her the trail went on, and that was true enough, because somewhere out past the mist it still did.
