Three small birds on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a woman's ankle and lower leg, wearing teal suede court shoes against a plain white background. Three small black birds in flight sit on the ankle, drawn with thin, even linework and no shading. The tattoo is the clear focus, and the teal shoes provide the only colour in the frame.

The third bird was always the one that stayed late, so Mrs Pell kept the back gate unlatched for her. Three birds had come over the sea wall the spring the Harrowgate lodgers left owing rent, and they had taken the eaves of the boarding house as if they had paid for them.

Her husband Tom said birds were no business of a landlady's and that the mess on the step was a cost. But she counted them each dusk from the scullery window, one, two, three, and when the wind came off the Channel they dropped low over the shingle and rose again like thrown ribbon. Nobody asked where they wintered. A lodger from Leeds once said they went to Africa, and she told him Africa was only a word for far.
In October the sea came over the front in a grey wall and took the lower rooms. Tom was at the lifeboat house with the other men. Mrs Pell carried the hall rug up to the landing and sat on the top stair with her good teal shoes beside her, the only pair she owned that wasn't brown, and watched the water find the skirting. The birds went out over the bay before the light failed, three black marks against a sky going the colour of pewter, and she did not count them as they went. She knew the number.
When the tide turned they were back on the eaves, and Tom came up the path at dawn with salt in his moustache, saying the lifeboat had been out for nothing. She fed them crumbs from the step. The third one took its crumb first, the way it always had.
