Small wing tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small wing tattoo, shaded in black and grey, sits on the side of an ankle. The feathers are drawn with defined outlines and soft shading that gives the wing some depth. A black high-heeled shoe and a pale bed sheet fill the rest of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Scarrow Quay had told Ada Crane she could not paint the wing on the Mercy's transom, but the harbourmaster had told her she should not, and she did it anyway, at the top of the spring tide, with a fine sable brush and a tin of lamp black she had taken from the chandler's back step.

The Mercy had been Eli's boat before he went out past the bar in October and did not come back. The fishermen said the sea took what it wanted and returned the rest on the shingle at Coldharbour, but the gulls over the harbour kept a different count. Old Sal Hewitt, who sold winkles from a barrow, said a gull that circled a boat three times was carrying a name home, and that a painted wing gave it somewhere to rest.

So Ada drew the feathers one by one, each with a hard edge along the top, then shaded the roots grey so the whole thing seemed to lift off the planking as the light moved across it. It took her four nights. On the fifth the harbourmaster came down the slip with his hands in his pockets and looked at the work for a long time before he said that paint did not bring anybody back.

"No," Ada said. "It only shows them the way."

At first light the Mercy was still on her cradle, and a single herring gull landed on the stern rail. It walked the length of the transom, stopped above the wing, and folded its own grey wings slowly, feather by feather, until they matched the painted ones exactly. Then it flew out over the bar and did not turn back.
