Ruth had been resoling shoes for thirty-one years when the glittery pair came across the counter, and she could tell before she turned them over that they had been danced hard in. The gold had rubbed grey along the toe box. The left heel was split clean through, and carpet fibres were caught in the gap like lint in a drain.

Her father had kept a bench in the same arcade on Queens Road, and he had a habit she had never found a name for. Inside the heel of every pair he worked on, he scratched a cross with the point of his awl, so small you needed the lamp to see it. Customers never noticed. He said it was so he could tell his work from the botched jobs of the man two doors down, but she suspected it was simpler than that. He liked to leave something of himself in places nobody looked.

She lifted the lining with a thumbnail. There it was, faint and slightly crooked, the same two strokes, a little deeper than she expected, as if the old awl had been pressed harder than usual.

She did not know where these shoes had been, and she did not ask. She cut a new heel block, glued it, and tapped in the nails with the steady rhythm he had taught her. Then she took up the awl, turned the shoe over, and scored her own cross into the fresh leather, a little off true, the way his always were.
