Faint ankle tattoo above brown monk strap shoes
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet in brown leather monk strap shoes with gold buckles stand on a grey textured pavement, with rolled dark jeans at the top of the frame. A small, faint grey tattoo of thin vertical lines is visible on the inner ankle, and its motif is hard to make out. The ink is muted against the skin, and the soft daylight gives the scene a warm, neutral palette.

Ruth had the ovens lit by half four, which was the only hour she trusted. Callum kept the till float in a biscuit tin by the back door and never said a word about the shoes she wore to work, though his eyebrows said plenty. Brown leather, two gold buckles gone soft at the edges, bought off a stall in Leeds for four pounds. They were the only pair that didn't pinch after a twelve-hour shift on wet flagstones.

The dough was ready before the light was. She took the baskets down from the proving shelf one at a time, turned each loaf out onto the peel, then dragged a razor across the top in three quick cuts, the same three her mother had used for thirty years. Each slash opened pale and wet, like a seam being let out. Nobody bought a loaf for its scoring; they bought it for the crust, and the crust came from the scoring, so she never skipped it.
On the shelf above the flour bins sat the old day book, its cover soft as cloth. Ruth had found it in March, wedged behind a sack of rye. Every morning since the shop opened, her mother had marked a single upright stroke in the margin, and every seventh one was crossed through. Ruth had assumed it was a count of deliveries. Then she counted the strokes and found they matched the bake days exactly.
She picked up the pencil, licked the tip, and added her own stroke beneath the last one. Outside, the first van pulled up to the kerb with its headlights still on. Ruth slid the tray into the oven and listened to the shoes on the tiles, a small tidy sound, like someone keeping time.
