Someone had drawn a wing beneath it, black and grey, every barb picked out with a fine brush, and when I leaned closer I saw it was your design, the one from the wax tablet the summer before you left. The painter said a man in the Pharos quarter had sold him the pattern for a jar of oil and a promise to bring the ship safely back. I did not ask him anything else. I only wanted you to know that your wing has travelled further than you have.
