Black and grey realism tattoo of a winged angel with dotted chains, placed centrally on a person's upper back.

Winged angel figure on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A standing winged female figure with her head tilted back is centred between the shoulder blades, with dark, detailed feathered wings spread wide on either side. Fine dotted chains hang from the wings and end in small pointed drops beneath the figure. The shading is soft and smooth, with strong contrast in the feathers, and the tattoo is set against plain, evenly lit skin.

Sit still and let me finish, because the road doesn't wait for anybody who fidgets. Out past Caddam Wells the sand had been creeping over the tarmac for three summers, and by the autumn the carriers stopped coming. Only one woman stayed at the crossing. Her name was Ilse Marrow, and she kept the lamp lit with a string of brass beads she'd hung from her shoulders like a tinker's wares.

Every night she climbed the post, let the beads fall down the wind side, and opened the wings she'd sewn from crow feathers and old canvas over the crossing. The drivers swore they saw her standing in the dust with her head tipped back, counting stars so she'd know which way was north. The beads chimed against the sand, and the little drops at their ends pointed the way for anyone lost.

One night in the cold, a van came with its headlights gone yellow and a man at the wheel who had not slept since Tuesday. He saw the chains swinging in the beam, followed them down the bank and found the road again. He stopped at the crossing and asked her why she didn't leave. She said the road had only ever needed someone to keep looking up.

Now mind, the lamp's still lit, though nobody's been out there to tend it for years. Go on, get your coat, and if you see beads swinging on the wind, you follow them home.
