Winged heart with script initial on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded angel wing rises from an outlined heart that holds a looping script letter H. A smaller ornate heart with filigree scrollwork sits beside it on the right. The wing is rendered in soft grey shading with feather detail, while the heart outlines are solid black, and the tattoo is photographed on smooth skin with a patterned fabric visible at the top edge.

The wire had to be drawn finer than a hair, and Phanias would not let me touch the bench tools until I had shown him three times that my hands did not shake. Four months I sat in the back room off the Canopic Street, pulling gold through the draw plate while the harbour bells rang the hours for the grain ships.

The order came from a shipwright's widow, and it was a plain one: a heart for her son, who had sailed for Cyprus with the spring wind and had not come home. She wanted the letter H worked into the centre for Hermon, and a wing rising from it so the heart might fly where he could not. Phanias bent the sheet over the stake while I shaped the wing from six strips, soldering each feather no wider than a barley grain. I was sure I had ruined the fourth one, and I had not.
The widow came back at dusk to see it. She turned the heart in the lamplight and ran her thumb over the small filigree heart I had coiled beside it, the one I had made from the scraps. She asked who had made that one. I said I had. She did not thank me. She closed my fingers around it and said the scraps were the only part of her son's trade she had ever been given to keep, and that I had set them where they belonged.
That night I melted down my crooked links from the first month and drew a fresh thread from the bottom of the crucible. It cooled the colour of wet sand. I coiled it into the drawer where Phanias kept his good tongs, and some mornings I still find it there, warm from the bench, waiting for a wing I have not yet learned to make.
