Black ink winged key with a triangle and circle design and the words It's real for us, on the outer lower leg above a sandal strap.

Winged key with script on lower leg

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A winged key sits across the lower leg with a triangle and circle emblem on the bow, a thin feathered wing above the shaft, and small star marks around it. Below the key, the words It's real for us are written in a loose, hand-drawn script. The ink is solid black with sketchy outlines, and the tattoo is shown against a wooden dock and blue water.

The key came in on the 4.12 wrapped in a bus timetable, and nobody on the platform at Coldharbour Halt could say who had left it. Mabry, who kept the lost property shelf because nobody else would, turned it over under the lamp. The bow was a triangle with a circle inside and a short line through the circle, worn nearly smooth, and a feather had been cut into the shaft so fine it caught the light like a hair.

"Doors won't have it," said Nell, the signalman's girl, who had tried it on the waiting room, the ticket hatch and the tin trunk under the bench. Mabry shrugged. His grandmother had told him that a key with wings was never made for a lock on the ground. It was made for the gate at the end of the sidings, where the rails ran up into the cutting and stopped at a wall of blackthorn nobody had cleared in forty years.

They walked out at dusk with a hurricane lamp. The gate had no keyhole, only a pale square where a plate had once been. Nell pressed the key flat to the wood, the feather lifted with a soft tick like a clock winding, and the blackthorn drew back the way a curtain does. Behind it was a platform with one lamp lit and a bench where a man in a grey coat sat reading a timetable.

He looked up, nodded at the key and said the late train was in. Mabry checked his watch. It was past midnight. The man stood, took the key from Nell's palm and went through the gate without a word. Mabry opened the ledger and wrote under today's date: one item claimed. When they turned round, the blackthorn had closed over the gap as if no gate had ever stood there.
