Winged skull with spears design
Mixed · Flash
A drawn design of a bird-like skull with a long beak and two dark eye sockets, centred between two sweeping, feathered wings. Five pointed spears with twisted handles rise above the skull and three more extend downward, crossing behind the beak. The wings and skull use loose, scratchy black linework with grey shading, while the spear shafts are rendered in a rust red on a plain white background.

Halden had driven the salt road for nineteen years and had never once seen the crows give up on a wagon. They gave up at Kettle Flats, a dry hour short of the bend where the tarmac ran out and the sand began to hum under the tyres. He stopped beside a dead mesquite and waited for the silence to tell him what it wanted.

It came walking out of the heat, tall and thin, three long shafts laid across one shoulder, their points drawing twin lines in the grit. Its head was a bird's skull, bone-pale, with a beak as long as a forearm and two eye sockets holding nothing but dark. Its wings hung folded behind it like wet sackcloth. "You are carrying one thing more than you were paid for," it said, in a voice like a door left open in wind.
Halden knew the cargo. Under a crate of tinned peaches bound for the chapel at Ostle lay a rifle wrapped in oilcloth, his late brother's, promised to a buyer who had since gone under. He had told nobody. "The peaches are for the widow," he said. "The rest is nobody's business."
The thing tilted its skull and laid the spears in the sand one by one, until five stood upright like a fence of rust-coloured reeds. "Then carry the weight you chose," it said, and turned back into the shimmer. At Ostle the widow counted the tins twice, then unwrapped the oilcloth with the care of someone expecting bones. It was empty. Halden never learned whose hand had lifted the rifle from it, only that the crows were back over the road the next morning.
