Winged skulls with roses and banner
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A drawn tattoo design showing two skulls meeting nose to nose beneath a pair of feathered wings, with a star between them. Purple roses sit at the base of the skulls, and a ribbon banner across the bottom reads Lethal Angel. The skulls and wings are rendered in grey pencil-style shading with fine highlights, while the roses are the only colour, set against a flat grey background.

The school hall still smelled of floor polish and wet coats, and someone had laid the buffet out with the cocktail sausages going cold at one end. I found Mel Dawes beside the squash table, peering at a name badge that had her surname spelt with one L too many. She didn't look up. 'Still got the notebook?' she said, which was how we said hello in Year 11, and I was glad she hadn't lost the habit.

The notebook had been our band's entire budget. We were Lethal Angel for one summer, two girls with a borrowed bass and a secondhand tape recorder, and we drew the logo on everything we owned: pencil cases, the back of maths jotters, the inside of our coat sleeves. Mel was always better at the wings. I did the skulls, which she said looked like potatoes with teeth, and we argued for a week about whether the star belonged above them or between them. We never got it onto a real wall, only paper.
Halfway through the sausages she pulled a folded sheet from her handbag and smoothed it on the table between the crisps and the name tags. It was our design, drawn again on graph paper, the roses coloured in with the only purple felt tip the school had. 'I kept it,' she said. 'Thought you'd want the one from before we fell out.' The two skulls on the page leaned in, nose to nose, as if about to say something unforgivable.
I looked at the drawing for a long time, then at the woman who used to share my bunk on the school trip to Llandudno. 'Lethal sounds right,' I said. Mel tapped the banner with a bitten nail. 'Angel was the optimistic bit,' she said, and slid the paper back across to me.
