Winged spark plug with crossed wrench and screwdriver

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

The design shows a spark plug centred between two feathered wings, with a open-ended wrench and a screwdriver crossed behind it. Grey smoke clouds sit behind the tools, and a yellow starburst with a red centre glows above the spark plug. The pencil-style shading gives the wings and tools strong form, and the colour is limited to the yellow, red and blue accents on the burst and screwdriver handle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The van had been dead since Tuesday, and Nell Corrigan was still swearing at it at half past nine on Thursday when the bay doors rattled open and the wind shoved a scrap of newspaper across the oil-black floor. She had the plug out already, a fat ceramic thing with a tired gap, and she held it under the strip light as if it might confess.

Her uncle Ray had taught her that a spark was only a promise. Two bits of metal a hair apart, and the whole engine waited on whether the current could leap the gap. "Set it right," he used to say, tapping the wrench against the bench, "and a bit of nothing becomes a bang." He had died in March with his tools laid out on the bench like a surgeon's, and she had left them that way out of stubbornness.

She filed the electrodes with a feeler gauge, seated the plug, and tightened it until the wrench bit. Turned the key. Nothing. Then a cough, a hiccup, and the van roared so suddenly that the rafters shivered and a fine rain of rust settled in her hair. Through the open doors the storm light flared white over the yard, and she could have sworn something bright hung above the roof, a ring of sparks where the clouds had been.

She wiped her hands on the rag, sat on the oil drum, and rang the number pinned by the till for the first time in a week. "It's going," she told the voicemail. "Come and hear it. And bring the screwdriver with the red grip, you know the one."
