The wind had flattened the sage against the cattle grid when Ada Vance saw the boy sitting on the verge in a blue pyjama suit, a red pair of socks pulled over his boots, and a pair of wings cut from a feather duster and bent to fit his shoulders. He was crouched like a sprinter at the blocks, staring at the empty road as if it owed him money. When she slowed, he stood up slowly, brushing grit from his knees with great dignity.

"Bus doesn't come on Sundays," he said, climbing in before she could argue. He folded his wings carefully against the seat back and explained, without being asked, that his uncle ran the petrol station at Tall Mesa and had promised him a job painting the water tower. The tower still bore a great grey shield, faded to a ghost of itself. "Nobody can fix a shield," he said. "You just have to stand under it and look like you mean it."

At the tower, he hopped out with a can of spray paint from his rucksack and shook it until it rattled like dice. Ada expected him to trace the old lines, but he began low, below the shield, drawing a small crouching figure with its wings half open. When he finished, he scratched two initials into the dust beside his boot and blew the grit away.

Ada watched the sun slide behind the hills. The shield above the little figure seemed, for a moment, almost bright, and the wing caught the last of the light as though it had only just landed.
