Superman in flight on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo of Superman in flight, shown from the front with his red cape streaming behind him and his arms swept back. The figure has smooth, blended shading and detailed highlights on the blue suit, red cape and yellow belt, with the shield emblem clearly defined on his chest. A loose orange and yellow wash behind him suggests sky and motion, and the image is framed tightly on the arm.

Your father's boat, the Margaret Ann, comes in last of the Tuesday fleet, low in the water with nothing in her hold but salt and a torn net trailing from the stern. Nobody on the quay says a word. You are twelve and have been counting gulls since dawn, and the men keep glancing past you to the north shelf, where the sky has gone the colour of a struck match.

The wind turns by noon. Your uncle's boat, the Ardent, is still out beyond the Skerry, and Mrs Fenwick is coiling rope on the lifeboat slip with hands like driftwood. She tells you nobody can go out in that. You go anyway, down the length of the mole, where a gap in the cloud is pouring orange light across the water.
Something lifts out of the spray. A figure in blue, a red cape snapping behind him like a sail, a shield on his chest bright as a lifebuoy. He comes down low over the waves with his arms swept back, slides his hands under the Ardent's stern and sets her on a sandbar clear of the rocks, then turns his face towards the slip, and you see it only for a moment before the cloud closes.
By morning the Ardent's crew are drinking tea in the wheelhouse and the men argue over what they saw. You say nothing. Some things are easier to keep than to hear laughed at in the Sail Loft. But every storm since, you check the sky above the headland before you check the tide, and you still watch for that orange light.
