Superman shield tattoo with torn skin effect
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the Superman shield in red with a yellow inner emblem, outlined in heavy black linework. Jagged black and grey shapes radiate from the shield, creating a torn skin effect, and soft grey shading sits behind the design. The image is a close crop with the shield filling most of the frame.

Mrs Abara's lift had been broken since March, so every evening the boys from the fourth floor carried the shopping up the stairs and swapped stories to pass the time. The tower was called Ashgrove. It had forty-two flats and one lift that worked on Tuesdays. Nobody knew who had painted the red and gold shield on the wall of the eighth landing, only that it had been there longer than anyone could remember.

Dev was nine and certain the shield was a door. He had seen the wall split once, in the rain, when damp bloomed under the paint and the plaster peeled back in long dark tongues, and behind it there was a light the colour of marmalade. He told the others on the stairs. Kofi laughed. Aisha did not, because she had seen it too.
On the night the power failed across the whole estate, Dev climbed to the eighth landing with a torch that had no batteries and a bag of crisps for luck. He pressed his palm flat to the shield. The plaster was warm. Something tore, softly, like a sheet being pulled off a line, and a gust of cold air came through smelling of cut grass and bus exhaust.
He stepped through and found himself on the same stairs, except they went up forever, and a woman in a faded cardigan sat on the bottom step mending a jagged black seam with a long needle. "You're late," she said. "Everyone's late for the lift." Dev had no idea what to say, so he offered her the crisps. She laughed so loudly that the lights came back on across Ashgrove, floor by floor, all the way to the top.
